August calendar

How it works

August is the eighth month. It follows July (31 days) and precedes September (30 days). Its own length does not change with leap years. Leap day is in February. August is one of the 31-day months, in the same group as January, March, May, July, October, and December.

The grid exists because dates have to sit on weekdays. Each cell is a date. Each column is a weekday. Which weekday receives 1 August depends on the year. Once the first is placed, the rest of the month fills in order: 2, 3, 4, and so on through 31. There is no skipped date in the middle. There is no 32 August.

Two common grids exist. A week that starts on Sunday puts Saturday at the end of the row. A week that starts on Monday puts Sunday at the end. The dates do not change. Only the columns move. Pick one convention for the whole page. Mixing them makes Thursday look like Friday and ruins any plan that said “the third column.”

To build the grid by hand, find the weekday of 1 August, write that date in the matching column, then fill rightward and downward until 31. Leftover boxes stay blank. Those blanks are not missing August days. They are July at the start or September at the end.

August 2026 on the grid

1 August 2026 is a Saturday. 31 August 2026 is a Monday. The month has its usual 31 days. If your week begins on Sunday, the first row holds only Saturday the 1st, with Sunday through Friday empty. If your week begins on Monday, the first row holds Saturday the 1st and Sunday the 2nd after five empty weekday cells.

July 2026 has 31 days and ends on Friday 31 July, the day before August’s Saturday start. September 2026 then begins on Tuesday 1 September, because 31 August is Monday. People looking up an August calendar are usually trying to see that Saturday start and that Monday finish, not trying to relearn that the month has 31 days.

August length every year: 31 days. August 2026: Saturday 1 through Monday 31. July ends the day before 1 August; September begins the day after 31 August. Empty cells on the grid are other months, not vanished dates.

Because 31 is not a multiple of 7, August cannot be exactly four weeks. 28 days would be four weeks; three extra dates spill into a fifth row on most layouts. That spill is normal. It is not a defect in the calendar you downloaded.

August always has thirty-one days. The grid is the only part that has to be redrawn each year. 2026 is not a leap year, but that fact does not touch August. If you are marking a holiday, a school start, or a trip, write the weekday next to the date. “August 31” in 2026 is a Monday. In another year it will be a different weekday and the same numbered month.
