Assumption day

How it works

The Catholic Church, and some other churches, keep 15 August as the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary: the belief that Mary was taken into heaven. Eastern churches keep a closely related feast of the Dormition on the same date in their calendar practice. The civil number is the same square: 15 August. It does not walk with Easter. It does not move to Monday to create a long weekend. If 15 August is a Tuesday, the feast is Tuesday.

In 2026, 15 August was a Saturday. The next 15 August is in 2027, again on whatever weekday that year assigns. Do not set a reminder on “the third Friday of August.” Set it on the fifteenth, or on the parish Mass time for that date.

Countries with a strong Catholic civil calendar often close shops, offices, or both on 15 August. France, Italy, Belgium, Austria, Poland, Spain, and several others treat the day as a public holiday in national or regional law. Greece keeps 15 August as a major public feast of the Dormition. The United States does not put Assumption Day on the federal holiday list. A closed bakery in Rome and an open bakery in Ohio can both be correct.

A fixed August date, not a floating Monday

Summer in the Northern Hemisphere already holds civic holidays that do float: some countries move a feast to Monday; the United States parks several commemorations on Mondays. Assumption Day is the other kind. The liturgy wants the fifteenth. A transfer of Mass to the nearest Sunday, where a bishop allows it for attendance, is a local timetable for the sitting. It does not rewrite 15 August on the civil wall, and it does not create a U.S. three-day weekend.

Travellers meet the date as a closed street in one city and as ordinary traffic in another. August heat and August holidays already thin some downtowns. Assumption Day can thin them further where it is a closing. If you need a shop, a government desk, or a pharmacy in a country that keeps the feast as a public holiday, finish the errand on 14 August or wait until 16 August. Do not argue with the shutter using a U.S. federal list.

Pin 15 August, every year. Read whether that country treats the date as a public holiday. Read whether your parish keeps Mass on the fifteenth or transfers the sitting. Do not convert the feast into a Monday weekend unless a local civil rule actually does that, which the traditional date does not.

August 15 does not slide to Monday to make a long weekend. The feast is the number on the wall.

What the day is for, and what it is not

Parishes that keep the solemnity use the Assumption readings and prayers. In some places processions and local saints’ days share the date. Family meals and beach trips happen because the date is also mid-August, not because the doctrine requires a picnic. A quiet 15 August at a U.S. desk is still Assumption Day on the church calendar. The lack of a federal closing does not cancel the feast. The presence of a European closing does not turn the feast into a shopping festival.

Do not confuse Assumption Day with the Immaculate Conception on 8 December, or with Marian Saturdays, or with the U.S. summer civic Mondays. Those are other squares. This page is 15 August. If a school, an office, or a travel plan needs a closing, ask the civil table of the country you will stand in that morning. If a church plan needs a Mass, ask the parish. Two questions. Two answers. One date.
