How it works

The word names the tenth. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, Ashura moves through the civil seasons. It is not a fixed Gregorian date like 25 December. Moon sighting can also shift the civil day by one between communities. If you need “when is Ashura this year,” use a trusted local prayer timetable or a moon-sighting announcement, not a remembered weekday from last year.

Muharram is among the sacred months. Ashura is the peak day of its first ten days. In some countries the date is a public holiday and offices close. In others it is a religious observance on a workday. “Holiday” in the vacation sense is a civil overlay. The religious day exists whether or not the banks rest.

Two histories share the tenth. They should be described separately, not mashed into one greeting-card sentence. A Sunni fast of thanks is not the same act as a Shia mourning procession. Both can occur on the same civil night in the same city. They are not a single party with two playlists.

Fasting and Karbala

In Sunni tradition, reports describe the Prophet Muhammad fasting on Ashura, linked to Moses and the Israelites' deliverance. After Ramadan became the obligatory fast, Ashura remained a voluntary, recommended fast. Many Sunni scholars encourage fasting the ninth (Tasu'a) with the tenth, so the day is not kept in the same pattern as a fast observed by others on the tenth alone. Fasting the tenth only is still widely treated as valid. The fast is not the Ramadan fast; it is a sunnah fast for those who keep it.

In Shia Islam, 10 Muharram is the day Imam Husayn ibn Ali, grandson of the Prophet, was killed at Karbala in 61 AH / 680 CE, with members of his family and companions, after refusing allegiance to the Umayyad ruler. The day is mourning: gatherings, elegies, processions, and visits to shrines, especially in Karbala. Practices vary by country and by community. Some include chest-beating; some include dramatic reenactment. The tone is grief and protest against injustice, not a feast.

Date: 10 Muharram, announced locally by the lunar month. Sunni emphasis: recommended fasting, often 9 and 10 Muharram, remembering Moses' deliverance. Shia emphasis: mourning for Husayn at Karbala. Civil status: a public holiday in some states, an ordinary workday in others.

The tenth of Muharram is one number with two memories. Flattening them does not make you clearer. It only makes you wrong about somebody in the room.

How to treat the day if it is not yours

If you are scheduling around Muslim colleagues, ask whether their community treats the day as a fast, a mourning assembly, or a public holiday. Do not serve a celebration cake to a mourning household. Do not assume a fasting colleague can taste a lunch meeting. Do not assume every Muslim keeps the day the same way.

If you keep the fast, follow your school's guidance on the ninth and tenth, and on what breaks a fast. If you keep the mourning, follow your community's rites and the local law on processions. If you only needed the word for a calendar, write “10 Muharram” and the civil date your mosque published. That pair is the holiday in practical terms.
