How it works

The New Testament places the Ascension forty days after the Resurrection. Luke 24 and Acts 1 are the usual readings. Easter Sunday is day one of that count, so the feast falls thirty-nine days later, always on a Thursday, because Easter is always a Sunday. The date walks with Easter. It is not a fixed 14 May, and it is not a Monday moved for a long weekend.

Western Easter in 2026 was 5 April, so Ascension Day was Thursday 14 May. Western Easter in 2027 is 28 March, so Ascension Day is Thursday 6 May. Pentecost follows ten days after the Thursday. Some Catholic dioceses, and some other churches, transfer the solemnity to the following Sunday so more people can attend. That transfer is a local timetable. It does not rewrite the forty-day count, and it does not turn the Thursday into a civic Monday.

In the United States Ascension Day is not a federal holiday. Offices, mail, and banks follow an ordinary Thursday. In several European countries, and in some other jurisdictions, the Thursday is a public holiday. Read the civil table of the country you are standing in. A closed shop in France on that Thursday and an open shop in Ohio are both following their own lists.

Thursday in Eastertide, not a second Easter

Eastertide already holds Easter Sunday, then this Thursday, then Pentecost. The three days are related and they are not interchangeable. Easter marks the Resurrection. Ascension Day marks the departure into heaven as the churches tell it. Pentecost marks the gift of the Spirit. If a parish poster says “Ascension Sunday,” ask whether they mean the transferred solemnity or a different feast. Do not file the Thursday under Easter Monday. Easter Monday is the day after Easter, not the fortieth day.

The old English popular name Holy Thursday can confuse travellers, because Maundy Thursday in Holy Week is also called Holy Thursday in some places. Ascension Thursday sits weeks later. If the church is still in Holy Week, you are in the wrong half of the season.

Rule: Thursday, fortieth day of Easter (thirty-nine days after Easter Sunday). 2026 (Western): Thursday 14 May. 2027 (Western): Thursday 6 May. United States: not a federal closing. Some churches keep the liturgy on the Sunday after that Thursday.

Orthodox churches that follow the Julian calendar keep the same forty-day logic on their own Easter. Their Thursday will not always match the Western Thursday. If a parish in your city is Orthodox, ask which Pascha they used this year before you put both congregations on one flyer.

What the day is for, and what it is not

Churches that keep the feast use special prayers and the Ascension readings. Some extinguish the paschal candle after the Gospel of the Ascension, as a sign that the Easter season is turning toward Pentecost. Some people walk up a hill because the story is an ascent. None of that is required of a civil calendar. A quiet Thursday at a desk in a country that does not close is still Ascension Day if that is the Thursday of the count.

Find Easter Sunday for the church calendar you actually use. Count to the Thursday that is the fortieth day. Check whether your parish transfers the Mass to Sunday. Check whether your country treats that Thursday as a public holiday. The two checks are separate.

Moving the Mass to Sunday does not move Easter. It only moves the sitting. After 14 May 2026 the next Western Thursday is 6 May 2027. Do not set a repeating alarm on 14 May. Set it on Easter, then add thirty-nine days, or look up the Thursday each spring. The feast is old; the civil number is not a birthday.
