April national days

April national days mix legal holidays, unofficial food days, and awareness dates. What is “national” today depends on which calendar you opened, not on one official list.

Time By Online Alarm Clock

what are the national days today

There is no single legal answer to “what are the national days today.” The United States keeps a short list of federal holidays. States add a few of their own. Unofficial almanacs print a different “national” snack, pet, or cousin for almost every square. Those almanacs are marketing and habit. They do not close the post office. If you need hours, use the federal and state holiday tables. If you need a hashtag, any unofficial list will oversupply you.

In April the mix is especially loud because spring already holds real civic dates. April Fools’ Day is 1 April: a custom of pranks, not a closing. Earth Day is 22 April every year, dating from 1970. National Arbor Day is the last Friday in April in the U.S. national version, though some states plant on other dates to match their climate. Patriots’ Day, marking Lexington and Concord, is a state holiday on the third Monday in April in Massachusetts and Maine; in 2026 that Monday was 20 April. It is not federal. A Boston Marathon Monday is not a day off in Arizona.

Western Easter sometimes falls in April. In 2026 it was Sunday 5 April. Easter Monday and Good Friday are public holidays in some places and ordinary weekdays in others. Tax Day in the United States is ordinarily 15 April, moved when that date is a weekend or a holiday in the District of Columbia. None of those is a “national tater-tot day.” Keep the legal column and the novelty column on separate clipboards.

What actually closes in April

Most April Tuesdays are workdays. The rare closings are local or religious, not a nationwide spring break. Federal list: April is usually empty of nationwide federal holidays. State example: Patriots’ Day, third Monday in April, Massachusetts and Maine.

Fixed civic date: Earth Day, 22 April, widely marked, not a bank holiday. Planting date: National Arbor Day, last Friday in April in the national version. Moveable feast: Easter, when it falls in April, plus local Good Friday rules.

Administrative Professionals Day — still called Secretary Day in older speech — is the Wednesday of the last full week of April in the United States and Canada. In 2026 that Wednesday was 22 April, the same number as Earth Day. Sharing a number does not merge the jobs. Admin Wednesday is a thank-you at a desk. Earth Day is a date about the planet. Flowers on a desk do not plant a tree, and a tree planting is not a lunch for the front office.

If every Tuesday in April is somebody’s national something, the word national has already done too much work.

How to read “today” without a fake statute

Ask three questions before you treat a label as a day off. Who named it? Does any government close for it? Is the date fixed or does it float? An unofficial “national siblings” square on 10 April, where it is commonly listed, answers: a family custom, no closing, fixed date. Patriots’ Day answers: state law in two states, yes those states close many public desks, floating Monday. April Fools’ answers: custom, no closing, 1 April.

A feed that dumps twelve “national days” onto one morning is not a civic calendar. It is a content farm. You can still use one of those labels for a joke, a classroom snack, or a kindness. You cannot use it to skip a shift unless your employer already said so. Spring in the north is already busy with school concerts and tax paperwork. Adding a fake closing on top of Tax Day is how a prank becomes a missed filing.

If you only wanted “what is special about this April date,” name the date. 1 April is the fool custom. 2 April is World Autism Awareness Day. 16 April is World Voice Day. 22 April is Earth Day. The last Friday is National Arbor Day in the national version. The last full week’s Wednesday is Administrative Professionals Day. The rest of the month’s “national” stickers are optional and unofficial unless a state or a church says otherwise for its own people.

Questions and answers

What are the national days today?
There is no single official list. Check federal and state holiday tables for closings, and treat novelty “national” labels as unofficial.
Is Earth Day a public holiday?
No. It is 22 April every year. Offices and banks follow ordinary hours unless a local body chooses an event.
Does April have a U.S. federal holiday?
Not as a regular fixture. State dates such as Patriots’ Day apply only where the state law says so.
