April Fools’ Day is 1 April every year, a morning of hoaxes and pranks. The date is fixed. The origin is not settled. In 2026 the day was a Wednesday; in 2027 it is a Thursday.
How it works
The custom is a licence with a clock. On 1 April, a joke that would be rude on 2 April is, in many households and offices, allowed until people agree the morning is over. The custom survives on restraint, not on escalation. Next year the date will still be 1 April, whatever weekday it wears.
