April calendar

How it works

April is month 4. It follows March (31 days) and precedes May (31 days), so it is the short month in a run of long ones. The old rhyme that assigns 30 days to April is describing this length. There is no April 31. Forms, reminders, and rent habits that still say “the 31st” from March will miss April entirely if you do not move them to the 30th or to May 1.

The April grid has 30 numbered days in weekly columns. The starting weekday changes each year. Leap years shift weekdays after February, so they can change April’s layout even though April’s length never changes. Two Aprils with the same starting weekday will look the same; two Aprils with different starting weekdays will not, even if both have 30 days.

Week numbering can jump in April if your calendar uses ISO weeks, but the dates themselves do not jump. The 15th of April is always the 15th. What changes is the column it occupies and the week number printed beside it.

Thirty days, and the traps that follow

The most common April mistake is borrowing March’s 31. The second is assuming a weekday from last April. The third is treating April 1 as a holiday everywhere because it is April Fools’ Day. April 1 is a named date. It is not a public holiday by itself in most places. Jokes are optional. Deadlines are not.

April length: 30 days, every year. April 1: first day of the month, also April Fools’ Day. April 30: last day of the month; there is no April 31. May 1: the next date after April 30. If you pay a monthly bill on the last calendar day, April’s last day is the 30th. If you pay on the last weekday, look at which weekday the 30th is, then step backward if that date is a weekend. The calendar is the tool for that step. A remembered “last Friday of March” will not transfer.

Season, clocks, and the next month

In regions that change clocks in spring, the change may already have happened in March, or it may fall in April, depending on the local rule. The April calendar will show the Sunday. It will not change how many dates the month contains. Schedule the extra or missing clock hour on that night; do not look for an extra square.

Because May has 31 days, plans that start in late April and “run a month” do not end on the same numbered day in May if you meant 30 days. Thirty days after April 10 is May 10. Thirty days after April 30 is May 30, not May 31. If you meant “the end of next month,” say May 31 and ignore the 30-day count.

April has thirty days, one fewer than March, a fact that still surprises anyone who tried to write the 31st. Print or open an April grid for the year you mean, write the year at the top, and treat the 30th as a hard stop. The month is short on purpose. The calendar’s job is to make the missing 31st obvious before you promise it to someone else.
