How it works

ANZAC names the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. On 25 April 1915 those troops landed on the Gallipoli peninsula, in what is now Türkiye, in a First World War campaign that failed to take the ground. The date became the national day of commemoration in both countries, later broadened to all who have served, not only the Gallipoli generation. The civil number does not move. 25 April 2026 was a Saturday. 25 April 2027 is a Sunday. Dawn services, wreaths, and a mid-morning march sit on the twenty-fifth even when that twenty-fifth is a weekend.

Australia treats 25 April as a public holiday in every state and territory. When the date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, some jurisdictions add a weekday holiday and some do not. For 2026, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory added Monday 27 April as an extra public holiday; other states kept the Saturday as the holiday without a bonus Monday. New Zealand also keeps 25 April as a public holiday and, under current holiday law, employees who do not normally work weekends receive a Monday when Anzac Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday. In 2026 that observed Monday was 27 April. In 2027, when the twenty-fifth is a Sunday, New Zealand’s observed weekday is Monday 26 April. The commemorations remain on the twenty-fifth. The extra Monday is pay and leave, not a second dawn.

The United States does not close for Anzac Day. Memorial Day (last Monday in May) and Veterans Day (11 November) are the usual American wartime dates. A U.S. office that stays open on 25 April is not making an error. It is on its own list.

Dawn is the appointment

Services begin in the dark because the landings began before sunrise. Cities publish their own start times. Returned service people march later in the morning. The words “Lest we forget” close many readings of the Ode. Two-up, a gambling game historically tied to the day, is a local custom in Australia with its own rules and limits; it is not the ceremony. Shop hours on the twenty-fifth are a state question. Do not assume a supermarket is open because a café near a dawn service is selling coffee.

Date: 25 April, fixed, Australia and New Zealand. 2026: Saturday 25 April; some Australian jurisdictions and New Zealand added Monday 27 April as a weekday holiday. 2027: Sunday 25 April; New Zealand observes Monday 26 April for workers who do not normally work Sundays.

United States: not a federal holiday. Lock 25 April for the wreath and the dawn. If you needed a weekday off in Australia, read that state’s gazette for that year. Do not copy New South Wales onto Victoria.

If you needed New Zealand leave when the date is a weekend, the extra Monday is the labour rule, not a second Anzac Day. If you needed a U.S. close, look at Memorial Day or Veterans Day instead. The dawn does not move to Monday. If you get a Monday off, that is the roster catching up. The silence still belongs to the twenty-fifth.

What the day is, and what it is not

It is a commemoration, not a victory picnic. Gallipoli was not a successful campaign. The day now holds later wars as well. It is not Australia Day (26 January) and not Waitangi Day (6 February in New Zealand). Those are nationhood dates with their own arguments. Anzac Day’s job is the dead, the living who served, and the people who waited at home. A barbecue after the march is a household choice in some places. It is not the liturgy. If you are not in Australia or New Zealand, a quiet hour at 25 April on your own clock is still the date. You do not need a public holiday to stand still.

After 25 April 2026 the next twenty-fifth is 25 April 2027. A wreath in May is still a wreath, only past Anzac morning. The Southern Hemisphere April close is the subject. A U.S. Monday is not. VE Day in May is not.
