All saints day
All Saints’ Day is 1 November in the Western church calendar. On Thursday 3 September 2026 it is not that feast. “What saint day is today” is a different question: many days honour a particular saint by name.
what saint day is today
What saint day is today asks for the name attached to this civil date in a church calendar, usually the Roman Martyrology or a local list. Almost every date of the year carries one or more commemorations. 3 September, for example, is not All Saints’ Day. In the General Roman Calendar, 3 September is the memorial of Pope St Gregory the Great. Other churches and other rites post other names. The answer is never “All Saints” except on the All Saints date itself, and it is never “there is no saint today” simply because you have not heard the name.
All day, as a search, is not the name of this feast. All Saints is a calendar day, kept from the civil morning of 1 November through that date’s night in ordinary parish use. It is not a 24-hour branded event and not a command to stay awake. If you typed “all day” meaning the whole of 1 November, the feast occupies that date. If you typed it meaning “is there a saint for every day,” the martyrology is built that way: names fill the year. The two searches collide in the same box. Separate them before you set a reminder.
Orthodox churches that keep the Byzantine calendar honour All Saints on the Sunday after Pentecost, not on 1 November. A parish on that rite will not treat the November date as their All Saints. Ask which calendar the parish actually uses. A mixed household can keep both days without pretending they are one.
The November feast
In the Latin West, All Saints’ Day is 1 November, a solemnity. It honours all the saints, named and unnamed. That is the point of a collective feast: the calendar cannot print every name, and the day refuses to limit itself to the famous. In many countries it is a holy day of obligation in the Catholic Church, meaning Mass is required that day unless the local bishops’ conference has lifted the obligation for that weekday. When 1 November falls on Saturday or Monday, some conferences, including in the United States, abrogate the extra obligation. When it falls on Sunday, the Sunday and the solemnity coincide. 1 November 2026 is a Sunday. 1 November 2027 is a Monday. Local notices still win over a general paragraph.
From 3 September 2026, 1 November 2026 is 59 days away. Halloween on 31 October is All Hallows’ Eve, the vigil of this feast, not a separate saint’s day. All Souls’ Day follows on 2 November, for the dead who are not being celebrated as saints. The three dates are a cluster. They are not synonyms. A costume on the 31st does not fulfil a Mass on the 1st. A cemetery visit on the 2nd is All Souls’ custom in many places, especially where 1 November is also a public holiday.
31 October: All Hallows’ Eve (Halloween), the eve of the feast. 1 November: All Saints’ Day in the Western calendar. 2 November: All Souls’ Day. Any other date: look up that date’s saint or saints, not this feast.
All Saints is the day for everyone the calendar could not fit. It is a poor answer to “which saint is today” on a random Thursday. Public holidays on 1 November exist in some countries and not in others. Where the day is a civil holiday, shops and schools follow that country’s labour rule. Where it is not, the feast is still 1 November for the parish. Do not wait for a Monday. Do not move it to the nearest Sunday unless your rite already did. If you only needed the name for today, use today’s date and a calendar of saints. If you needed All Saints, write 1 November and leave September alone.
