How it works

How it works as a beer is a style choice. A typical American IPA is stronger and more bitter. A session beer is built to a lower alcohol so that more than one serving can sit in an afternoon without the same load. Founders lists All Day IPA at 4.7% alcohol by volume, with Crystal, Cascade, Amarillo, and Simcoe hops, and a citrus-floral profile. It is sold year-round in cans, bottles, and draft. That is the product. “All day” is the marketing sentence sitting on top of the 4.7.

How it works as a weekday drink is a clock and a law. Alcohol service and off-premise sales follow local rules. A Monday noon pint in a taproom is a different legal and social object from a Friday midnight round. Founders’ Grand Rapids taproom posts its own hours: Monday through Thursday 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Those hours are for that room. A grocery cooler in another state can sell the 15-pack on a different clock, including Sunday restrictions where they exist.

Keep the pieces separate: The beer: session IPA, 4.7% ABV, 42 IBU, Grand Rapids, year-round. The day: a named weekday or weekend date on which you mean to drink it. The room: taproom, bar, or shop, each with posted hours.

The stop: a time after which another can is no longer an “all day” idea but a late night. Founders was founded in 1997. All Day IPA has been in the lineup long enough that the brewery marked 15 years of it with anniversary packaging in 2026. A 15-year can still contains 4.7%. The birthday is the label, not a new strength.

Weekday, not all night

The joke in the name is that many IPAs are evening beers. This one was aimed at daylight: lawn, lunch, a long afternoon. Daylight on a weekday ends earlier in November than in June. The beer does not know. You do. A 4.7% can at 12:30 on a work-from-home Tuesday is a choice about the rest of that Tuesday. A 4.7% can at 12:30 on a Saturday is a choice about the rest of that Saturday. The percentage did not change. The calendar around it did.

Session does not mean unlimited. Alcohol still adds up. The style name tells you the brewery aimed lower than a double IPA. It does not tell you how many cans fit a body, a commute, or a policy at work. If you have to drive, the weekday afternoon is not a tasting room. If your job forbids alcohol on the clock, “all day” stops at the start of the shift, which is the opposite of the slogan and the only reading that keeps the job.

All day is a strength and a sales line. It is not a note from your employer, and it is not a sunrise-to-last-call permit.

Hours around the can

Bars and shops set when you can buy. Some U.S. places limit Sunday morning sales. Some do not. Do not copy Michigan taproom hours onto a Monday in a dry county. Read the door in front of you. If the taproom opens at 11:00, 10:30 is still a wait. If a stadium pours a 19.2-ounce can during a weekday game, that serving is still 4.7% in a larger cup of time.

Other beers in the All Day family exist, including hazy versions at the same 4.7% idea. A later “light” offshoot is a different product with its own strength. If the can says All Day IPA, you are in the original session IPA lane. If it says something else, read the side of that can. Names in a series are not interchangeable liquids.

Pair the drink with a named end of day. Weekday last call at home can be earlier than weekend last call because Tuesday morning still exists. The IPA will be in the fridge tomorrow. Tomorrow is another weekday with the same ABV and a new date.
