How it works

Daily books used in and around Alcoholics Anonymous are built as a year of calendar pages. 25 December has an entry. 1 January has an entry. 3 September has an entry. The mechanism is the date, not a special holiday chapter at the back. If you skip Christmas because the house is full, you skipped that date’s reading. You can read it later. The spine of the book will still call it 25 December’s page, not “the feast bonus.”

Alcoholics Anonymous as a fellowship is not the same body as every publisher of recovery readers. AA’s own Daily Reflections is one dated book. Other houses print their own morning pages. This guide will not quote those pages. Copyright sits on those books. The calendar job is public: match today’s civil date in your time zone to the heading on the page.

Many of the books reuse the same 365 entries each year, with a 29 February page that is open only in a leap year. 2026 is not a leap year, so February ends on the 28th. Christmas 2026 is Friday 25 December. New Year’s Day 2027 is Friday 1 January. Those Fridays still get the 25 December and 1 January pages, not a “Friday substitute.” The thought does not move to Monday because a federal office is closed.

Index: today’s local civil date. Holiday pages exist; they are still dated pages. Leap day is only in leap years. A meeting list is a separate clock from the reading.

Feast days still have a morning

Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Thanksgiving are the dates when people most often ask whether the daily reader “takes the day off.” The book does not. The fellowship may change meeting times. Some groups hold extra meetings on 25 December and 1 January because the ordinary week is disrupted. Some groups go dark. A thought on a page is not a substitute for a meeting you needed, and a meeting is not a substitute for the page if the page is the tool you actually use.

Travel across time zones on a holiday is the usual trap. A 25 December flight east can land on 26 December. Read the date under the local clock where you are standing, not the date printed on the boarding pass at pushback. A worldwide email that blasts “today’s thought” at one instant will be early for some kitchens and late for others. Local date is the fair index, on feasts as on Tuesdays.

A holiday that swallows the morning reading is still only one date. The book has a page for it. The dishes do not get a veto.

Just for today is a size, not a season

“Just for today” as a slogan sizes the work to one date. That is why the readers are dated at all. Pulling the Christmas page forward in October is how a daily tool becomes a binge. Leave 25 December shut until 25 December. Leave 1 January shut until 1 January. If you need a reminder on a feast morning, set a clock hour — 08:00, not “after presents” as a vague season. Presents can overrun. 08:00 still happens.

If you are looking for a meeting on a holiday, use a current meeting list for that town and that date. Do not treat a meditation page as a door that will be unlocked at a certain hour. The thought-for-the-day calendar only tells you which page matches the square under the meeting, if a meeting is happening at all.
