A week away

How it works

A week is seven named days in a fixed order. When an event is a week away, the pointer is the date seven days ahead, not a fog of “soon.” The weekday repeats. The month number may change if you cross a month end. The year number may change if you cross 31 December. The step size does not change.

The phrase is a pointer, not a duration you live twice. On Thursday, the concert a week away is next Thursday. After you sleep, it is six days away. The target date did not move. Today did. If the plan has to survive a conversation, write the target as a date. “Next week” is a region of several weekdays. “A week away” is one square.

Keep the clock time if the event has one, unless a daylight-saving change sits inside the seven days and you care about the hour. The date of “a week away” is still seven names forward. The local clock time of “same time next week” can argue in the skipped or repeated hour. The square on the wall does not.

Write the year when the seven days cross New Year. 28 December plus seven is 4 January. People forget the year more often than they forget the weekday.

Seven steps, then check the weekday

Count seven calendar dates forward, not seven working days, unless someone said working days. A week away includes the weekend that sits inside an ordinary Monday-to-Monday span. Skipping Saturday and Sunday would be a week of work, which is another phrase.

Note today’s weekday and date. Add seven days, rolling the month when you pass its last date. Confirm that the weekday matches. If it does not, the month length was handled wrong. Keep the event’s clock time unless you are dealing with a skipped or repeated hour.

February is the usual trap. Seven days after 26 February is 5 March in a common year and 4 March in a leap year. The weekday test still saves you: arrival weekday must match starting weekday. Seven days after 28 June is 5 July, because June has 30 days, not 31.

A daylight-saving change does not add or remove a civil date. You still advance seven names. Do not let a 23-hour Sunday or a 25-hour Sunday talk you into six dates or eight dates. If you count today as day one of the week away, you arrive a day early and blame Thursday for moving.

What the phrase refuses to mean

It is not “sometime next week,” which can be any of several weekdays. It is not eight days, which is what you get if you include today and the target as two full days of waiting. Elapsed days from today to the same weekday next week are seven. Inclusive dates from today through that weekday are eight squares.

It is not a workweek. Five working days from a Wednesday is the next Wednesday only if you skip the weekend; that is a business-day count. A week away does not skip the weekend unless both speakers are using office slang and both know it.

It is not a month. Four weeks are 28 days, shorter than every month except a common February. Using “a week away” when you mean “in a few weeks” throws away the only useful thing in the phrase: a number you can check.
