Dickens, Christmas Eve, and the carols in the title
A Christmas Carol is a novella told in “staves,” like a song. Christmas carols, in the other sense, are the hymns and seasonal songs sung in streets, churches, and living rooms. Dickens leaned on that second meaning for his title. The book is not a hymn sheet. You can read it without singing. You can also sing carols without reading Scrooge. The overlap is the season: both belong to the days around 25 December.
The action runs through Christmas Eve night into Christmas morning. That timing is why it is a holiday story rather than a general ghost story. The spirits finish their work before the shops of Dickens’s London would have been busy with the day’s charity. Scrooge’s reform is dated. It happens in time for the dinner.

A Christmas Carol 1984, 2009, and the Zemeckis film
A Christmas Carol 1984 usually means the television film with George C. Scott as Scrooge. It is a straight retelling for a living-room audience, period costume, the familiar ghosts. A Christmas Carol 2009 usually means the Disney motion-capture film directed by Robert Zemeckis, with Jim Carrey as Scrooge and as the spirits. That is the Zemeckis Christmas Carol: the same novella, a different machine, a camera that flies through London in a way Dickens’s prose did not need to.
Neither film replaces the book. Both keep the spine: Marley’s warning, three visitations, a changed morning. If you put one on after dinner, say which year you mean, because “the 1984 one” and “the Zemeckis one” are not the same evening. There are many other versions. These two are the years people search by number.
Scrooge and the Grinch are both Christmas thieves. Only one of them is Dickens, and only one of them is green on purpose. Read a stave aloud if you have a table that will sit still. The book is short enough for a Christmas Eve. If the children are younger, Seuss is the shorter road. If the argument is about which miser learned faster, you have already left literary history and entered family sport, which is also a Christmas custom.
