What is 90 days ago is a backward day count, not a month name. Take today’s date, including the year, and step 90 days toward the past. The month heading will change. The year will change if you are early in the year. The method does not care what the months are called. It cares that each step is one calendar day.

Ninety days is 12 weeks and 6 leftover days, because 12 × 7 is 84, and 6 remain. That leftover is why “90 days ago” and “12 weeks ago” are different dates: 12 weeks ago is 84 days ago. Thirteen weeks would be 91 days, one day farther back than 90.

You cannot print a single date on a page and have it stay true for every reader’s “today.” Today moves. The method stays. A date tool that subtracts 90 from today’s date is doing that method. Doing it by hand is the same subtraction with more chances to skip a month length.

90 days ago: today minus 90 calendar days. 60 days ago: today minus 60 calendar days (8 weeks and 4 days). 30 days ago: today minus 30 calendar days (4 weeks and 2 days). Three months ago: month arithmetic, which is not the 90-day count.

From Thursday 3 September 2026, 90 days ago is Friday 5 June 2026. That pair is a worked example for that morning, not a number that stays true tomorrow. On 4 September 2026 the same 90-day look-back lands on 6 June 2026. The offset is always 90. The printed square is not.

Sixty days ago and thirty days ago

Sixty days ago and 30 days ago use the same backward count with smaller steps. Thirty days ago is not “last month on this day,” because last month may have had 28, 29, 30, or 31 days. From 31 March, thirty days ago is not 31 February; February has no 31st. From 31 March, one calendar month ago also needs a rule, because February is short. Thirty days ago does not need that rule. It lands on an actual date that exists.

From 3 September 2026, 60 days ago is Sunday 5 July 2026, and 30 days ago is Tuesday 4 August 2026. Those are the same family of counts as 90, just shorter. Stack 30, 60, and 90 when you want a set of day look-backs. Keep “a month ago” in a separate pile.

Going forward is the mirror: 90 days from today is today plus 90, still not three months later by default. 60 days from today and 30 days from today follow the same plus sign. Leap day, when you cross it, is one of the 90, 60, or 30. It is not an optional extra you add at the end. A month name is a bucket of changing size. Ninety days is a pile of identical stones.

Why three months will not stand in

Three calendar months can be 89, 90, 91, or 92 days depending on which months you crossed and whether 29 February sat in the path. That is why a “90-day” period in a contract is safer when it is written as days. If the text says 90 days ago, do not substitute the same numbered day three months earlier and call the job done.

Month-end dates show the trap fastest. Three months before 31 May is not a clean 31 February. Ninety days before 31 May 2026 is Monday 2 March 2026. That is a day count. It is not renaming May as February.

If two people share “90 days ago” they must share today’s date. A traveller who has already crossed midnight in another zone may already be on a different civil day. Write the zone or the place next to the look-back if the 90-day mark has legal weight. The count is simple. The civil day you start from is the part that drifts.
