Current time in South Tarawa
Kiribati is the rare country with three time zones, all ahead of UTC. South Tarawa, the capital, sits in the westernmost of them at UTC+12; the eastern island groups run further ahead still.
Three zones across an ocean
Kiribati is spread across an enormous area of the Pacific — a scattering of atolls covering a span of ocean far wider than most continental countries. That geography is the reason for three separate zones rather than one.
The Gilbert Islands, including South Tarawa, keep UTC+12. The Phoenix Islands keep UTC+13. The Line Islands, furthest east, keep UTC+14 — the furthest-ahead standard time anywhere. All three are on the same side of the date line as far as the calendar is concerned. Kiribati adjusted its arrangements so that the whole country shares one date, ending a situation in which parts of the same nation were a day apart from each other — an obvious problem for a government trying to run a working week.
The country where the day begins
Because the Line Islands sit at UTC+14, they are among the first inhabited places on Earth to reach any given calendar date. A new year, a new month or an ordinary Tuesday arrives there before anywhere else.
Somewhere in Kiribati it is already tomorrow — which is a fine thing to know and a terrible thing to rely on when booking a call.
Daylight saving and daily practice
None of the three Kiribati zones observes daylight saving time. Each offset is fixed throughout the year, which at least means the internal gaps between island groups never change: the Line Islands are always two hours ahead of the Gilberts, and the Phoenix Islands always sit one hour between them.
For anyone dealing with Kiribati from outside, the practical discipline is to establish which island group is meant before agreeing any time at all. "Kiribati time" is not a single answer. Government business centred on Tarawa runs on UTC+12, but a contact on Kiritimati in the Line Islands is two hours ahead of that.
Working with a country this wide
Ask for the island or island group, not just the country, when someone quotes a local time. In scheduling software, use the specific zone identifier for the island rather than a country-level guess. Remember that the extreme forward offsets mean much of the world is on the previous calendar day relative to Kiribati during ordinary working hours.
Communications, shipping and flight connections across the groups cross internal time boundaries — allow for that when reading a schedule end to end.
