Port-au-Prince sits at the head of its bay on the western side of Hispaniola, and it keeps the national clock. The zone identifier is America/Port-au-Prince. Cap-Haïtien on the north coast, Les Cayes in the south and Jacmel on the southern shore all use the same time as the capital.

Sharing an island, not always a clock

Haiti occupies the western third of Hispaniola; the Dominican Republic occupies the rest. The two countries do not always keep the same time. The Dominican Republic stays on UTC−4 permanently, while Haiti observes a seasonal change — which means the border is a place where the clock difference appears and disappears depending on the month.

When Haiti is on daylight saving (UTC−4), the two countries match. When Haiti returns to UTC−5, it falls an hour behind its neighbour. Crossing at Malpasse or Ouanaminthe may therefore mean adjusting your watch, or may not.

Anyone with business on both sides should check the date before fixing a meeting. On one island, two countries, and a border where the hour depends on the season — always name the date as well as the time.

Daylight saving in Haiti

Haiti observes daylight saving time, moving the clocks forward one hour in spring and back again in autumn, on the pattern used across much of North America. During the shifted period the country is on UTC−4; outside it, on UTC−5. Because Haiti sits in the tropics, the daylight gained is modest compared with what the same shift produces in Canada or northern Europe — the sun here does not vary its hours as dramatically.

The alignment with North America is the practical benefit. When New York and Miami change their clocks, Haiti changes too, which keeps the difference to the large Haitian communities and business partners in those cities constant through the year.

Departments and travel

Haiti is divided into departments, from Nord and Nord-Est down through Ouest, where the capital lies, to Sud and Grand'Anse. All of them are on the one national clock. Domestic journeys — the road to Cap-Haïtien, the route south to Les Cayes, the flights that connect the coasts — never cross a time boundary. The only clock question that arises inside the country is the twice-yearly changeover itself.

Points to remember when scheduling

Use America/Port-au-Prince rather than a fixed offset, since the offset changes seasonally. Confirm whether the Dominican Republic is currently matching Haiti before booking cross-border travel. With North American partners, the difference stays constant because both sides change at the same season.

With European partners, expect the difference to shift, since the changeover dates do not coincide exactly.
