What time is it in Ciudad Juárez

Ciudad Juárez is a city in Chihuahua, Mexico, on the Rio Grande opposite El Paso. It does not keep a Chihuahua-state hour that you can copy from the inland capital. Official clocks here follow Mountain Time, aligned with the United States side of this crossing: Mountain Standard Time in the colder months and Mountain Daylight Time once the border springs forward. Computers usually store that pair as America/Ciudad_Juarez. That identifier is the one to pick. A menu that only offers “Mexico” or “Chihuahua” can land you on the wrong stamp.

Most of Mexico no longer changes clocks for summer. Northern border municipalities still do, on the United States schedule, so that this city and El Paso keep matching numerals through the year. Clocks here jump forward one hour on the second Sunday in March, at 02:00 MST toward 03:00 MDT, and back one hour on the first Sunday in November, at 02:00 MDT toward 01:00 MST. In 2026 the border does that on 8 March and 1 November.

The inland city of Chihuahua, under current rules, stays on Central Standard Time (UTC-6) all year. Ciudad Juárez does not. In winter this border is an hour behind that inland capital. In summer the two can show the same numerals for a stretch because Juárez has jumped onto UTC-6 while Chihuahua never left it. Treat that overlap as a coincidence of offsets, not as proof that the state is one zone.

A border hour the rest of the state dropped

El Paso, Texas, keeps Mountain Time. Most of Texas keeps Central Time. A call toward Houston needs arithmetic. A call across this river, into El Paso, should not. If a phone in Juárez flips to a Central offset after roaming, that is a device guessing “Texas” or “Mexico” too coarsely. Set it back to America/Ciudad_Juarez or to Mountain Time.

Winter: MST, UTC-7. Summer: MDT, UTC-6. Computer name: America/Ciudad_Juarez — not America/Chihuahua, and not a generic “Mexico” tag. Sun and weather: use this city’s coordinates, not El Paso’s as a substitute and not a pin in the middle of the state.

A meeting stored as “09:00 Ciudad Juárez” in a calendar that understands America/Ciudad_Juarez will move correctly when the border jumps. A meeting frozen as UTC-7 will not. Hand-written times across the March or November weekend should say MST or MDT, not only the digits.

Inland Chihuahua stopped jumping. This border did not. Set America/Ciudad_Juarez, not a Chihuahua-city clock.

Desert sun across the river

Sunrise and sunset here are computed from this city’s latitude, longitude, and date. They are not a binational average. El Paso’s pair will be close. It is still the wrong pin if you need this bank of the river. The Chihuahuan Desert climate — hot, dry much of the year, with a summer rainy spell — can hide the disk in dust or a storm without moving the printed minute. Calculated sunrise is geometry. First usable light is the window.

Day length changes through the year because this latitude is well north of the tropics. Winter mornings start later on the wall. Summer evenings stretch. Light and the legal jump both move the numbers; they are not the same cause. Do not hang a March dawn only on daylight time, and do not hang a short December afternoon only on the fall-back. Read today’s pair on this page.

Heat is weather. It is not an offset. A 14:00 meeting in July is the same Mountain Daylight Time whether the pavement is brutal or a dust wind has dropped the temperature. Offices still ring on the civil hour. Outdoor plans should follow heat, light, and the forecast together. The weather line is the present reading for Ciudad Juárez. It is not an El Paso copy you should treat as identical, and it is not a climate slogan for the whole state.

Partners in Mexico City will not jump with this border. When MDT begins, the gap to much of the country changes even though they did nothing. Partners in Japan or Europe jump on other weekends. Store the event in America/Ciudad_Juarez so this side of the display stays at the local hour you meant.

Questions and answers

What time zone is Ciudad Juárez in?
