What time is it in Sendai

Sendai is the capital of Miyagi Prefecture, on the Pacific side of Tohoku in northern Honshu. It does not keep a prefectural hour. Official time is Japan Standard Time, nine hours ahead of UTC, the same offset as Tokyo, Osaka, and Sapporo. There is no winter delay for the north, and no summer jump. A clock here and a clock in Tokyo display the same numbers at the same instant.

The usual computer identifier is Asia/Tokyo. The identifier is national. It is not a hint to copy Tokyo’s sunrise onto this plain. If a form offers Tokyo or “Japan,” that is the setting you want. Older advice about Japanese daylight saving describes a past experiment, not present civil time. Keep daylight saving disabled.

Sendai sits east of the 135°E meridian that Japan Standard Time is built on. Highest sun therefore comes while the wall still says morning. That is expected in Tohoku. Tohoku on the national hour

A trip from Sendai to Tokyo does not change the watch. It changes the weather, the day length, and how soon the afternoon fades. A trip toward mainland China does change the watch: China Standard Time is UTC+8, one hour behind. A trip toward South Korea is usually the same UTC+9 numerals, with each country’s own rules about whether that offset ever jumps. Convert city to city. “Pacific” is not a zone.

Miyagi is large enough that dawn on the ria coast is not the same minute as dawn in the city. The civil hour is still JST everywhere in the prefecture. If you need first light for a place outside Sendai, use that place’s coordinates. Copying the city’s sunrise across the prefecture is how people miss the disk on a shore they are not standing on. Tohoku is north of Tokyo. The offset is not.

Sendai’s latitude gives it a larger swing in day length than much of southern Honshu. Winter afternoons end earlier than in Tokyo. Summer evenings linger longer. That swing is the sun. Miyagi does not legislate it. Dawn and dusk on this page are for today’s date in Sendai. Do not paste a December dawn into June, and do not paste a Kanto city’s times onto this plain.

The Pacific side of Tohoku is not the snow country of the Japan Sea coast. Winters are still cold; summers are warm and humid. Cloud, rain, and the occasional coastal fog can hide a calculated sunrise. The listed minute is still the calculated sunrise. The weather line is Sendai’s present condition. It is not a mountain forecast for inland Miyagi and not a climate average for the whole of Tohoku.

Grey usable light lasts longer in June and shrinks in December. If you need that fringe rather than the official sunrise, use a dawn or dusk figure for these coordinates. Civil twilight is when walking without full daylight is still practical. In midwinter that fringe is the part of the morning that actually matters.

A desk in London or New York may still jump with the seasons. Sendai will not. A weekly call at 10:00 here stays at 10:00 here. If that 10:00 suddenly feels early at their end, they sprang forward. Keep the event tagged as Asia/Tokyo or as UTC+9. Write the city. “Japan time” is accurate for the hour and still the wrong sunrise if you needed Miyagi’s winter morning rather than Tokyo’s.
