What time is it in Ottawa
Ottawa is the capital of Canada, in eastern Ontario, on the Ottawa River opposite Gatineau in Quebec. It does not keep a capital-only hour, a bilingual hour, or a Rideau hour of its own. Official clocks follow Eastern Time: Eastern Standard Time in the colder months and Eastern Daylight Time once Ontario springs forward. Computers usually store that pair as America/Toronto. The identifier names a provincial zone file. It does not move a parliamentary sitting onto Lake Ontario.
Clocks here jump forward one hour on the second Sunday in March, at 02:00 EST toward 03:00 EDT, and back one hour on the first Sunday in November, at 02:00 EDT toward 01:00 EST. In 2026 those Sundays are 8 March and 1 November. Spring deletes 02:00. Autumn repeats 01:00. Overnight schedules have to say which occurrence they mean.
Canada is not one zone. St. John’s, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Vancouver are not on this page. If a counterpart said “Canada time,” ask which city. If they said “Ottawa time,” you have this clock. New York often keeps the same Eastern pair today; that match is convenient and still not a reason to copy New York’s sunrise onto the Rideau.
A capital that jumps with Eastern Time
Crossing the river into Gatineau changes the province. It does not change the hour. Western Quebec keeps Eastern Time as well. A sitting that starts at 10:00 in Ottawa starts at 10:00 on the Gatineau side of the bridges. What the river does change is the municipal sign, the forecast in a valley, and which sunrise table you should have opened.
Most of Ontario is on Eastern Time, but the province is not a slogan you can export to every Ontario address. Northwestern corners of the province use Central Time. This page is Ottawa. Write Eastern Time, EST, EDT, or UTC−5/−4, and name the capital. “9 a.m. Canada” is not a time. “9 a.m. Eastern Time in Ottawa” is.
Winter: EST, UTC−5. Summer: EDT, UTC−4. Computer name: America/Toronto — eastern Ontario civil time, including the capital. Quebec neighbour: Gatineau keeps the same Eastern pair. Sun and weather: Ottawa’s coordinates, not a Toronto lakeshore dawn and not a Gatineau paste.
Eastern Time is built on the 75°W meridian. Ottawa sits close to that line, so in standard months solar noon falls near 12:00 on the wall. That closeness is longitude, not a civic prize. In summer the legal hour is tied farther east, so the sun’s peak moves later against the clock. A 12:00 EDT lunch can still feel like late morning by the light. Believe the diary and the disk separately. Do not “correct” a watch to match a shadow on Parliament Hill. Gatineau is another province. It is not another hour.
Rideau light and river weather
Ottawa sits far enough north that day length changes a great deal between December and June. Late summer evenings are daylight, not proof that “the clocks are still wrong.” Dark winter afternoons are the tilt of the Earth plus this latitude. After the November fall-back, sunset sits on an earlier civil minute, on top of an already short day. Once EDT begins, the listed rising sits later on the wall even though the sun did not sleep in. This page’s sun block follows the selected date. Do not reuse a canal dusk from June on a January walk.
The listed rising is geometry against an empty horizon. Ice haze, low cloud, and the city’s own buildings can hide the disk. First gleam off the river is a window fact. Trust the table for that calculated instant. If you needed usable outdoor light on the canal, civil twilight is the better mark.
Weather is a separate column. Cold winters, a humid summer, and river-effect snow or ice can change the coat without touching the offset. A white-out at noon is still noon Eastern Time. Dress from the weather line. Schedule from the civil clock. If the meeting needed remaining sun, say so; the hour alone will not. The weather block is Ottawa’s present reading, not a provincial average and not a Montreal copy.
Partners in Japan or China will not jump with Ottawa. The start of EDT widens or shrinks those gaps by one hour while they stand still. If you run a weekly call with a city that does not use daylight saving, update the conversion on Ontario’s change dates, not on a calendar from the other country. They stayed put. You did not. Store the event as America/Toronto so the Ottawa side of the display stays at the local hour you intended.
