Current time in Washington, United States
Every county in Washington state belongs to the Pacific Time Zone. Standard time is PST at UTC−8, and daylight time is PDT at UTC−7. A current display should change its offset according to the daylight-saving calendar.
Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, Vancouver, Bellevue, and communities on the Olympic Peninsula all share one civil clock. The state’s east-to-west breadth affects solar time, but it does not create a second official time zone. Neighboring Oregon uses Pacific Time in most areas, while Idaho contains more than one zone.
Washington has mountains, islands, rainforest, and dry country; fortunately, it did not add a second clock to the collection.
Washington cities from Puget Sound to Spokane
Seattle is Washington’s largest city. Spokane is the major urban center in the eastern part of the state. Tacoma, Vancouver, Bellevue, Kent, Everett, and Renton are other large communities. Olympia, located near the southern end of Puget Sound, is the state capital.
When checking Washington time: Use Pacific Time for every city in the state. Remember that Washington state and Washington, D.C., are in different zones. Use PST only for standard time and PDT only during daylight saving.
Choose a local city for accurate sunrise information. Check the destination zone before crossing into Idaho. A statewide online event can safely list Pacific Time, though adding the current UTC offset helps international participants. Within Washington, travelers do not change their watches between Seattle and Spokane, even though the long journey produces a noticeable difference in daylight timing.
Sunrise west and east of the Cascades
Sunrise varies across Washington because the state extends widely in longitude and includes substantial differences in latitude and terrain. Spokane and Seattle use the same clock but do not receive sunrise at precisely the same moment. The Cascade Range also creates very different horizons.
At northern latitudes, seasonal changes in daylight are conspicuous. Summer days are long, with early dawn and late evening light. Winter days are shorter and sunrise occurs later. The daylight-saving adjustment changes the clock label, adding another visible shift to sunrise schedules.
Mountains, forests, buildings, and marine weather can all affect observation. Standard tables calculate the astronomical event and cannot promise that the sun will be visible. For a ferry departure, mountain outing, or photograph, use the nearest place and date, then consider local obstructions and conditions.
