One local time applies throughout New Jersey. Newark, the Atlantic coast, the Delaware River communities, and the state’s northwestern corner all set their clocks alike. There is no internal time-zone boundary to consider when traveling across the state.

New Jersey uses EST in the standard-time part of the year and EDT during daylight saving time. Its seasonal clock changes are coordinated with those in neighboring New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.

The state therefore shares local time with New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, and other Eastern Time destinations. That is especially useful for commuters whose trip crosses the Hudson or Delaware without crossing a time-zone line.

New Jersey traffic can make a short journey feel longer, but at least the destination is never in another time zone.

Local time in New Jersey’s largest cities

Newark and Jersey City are among the state’s largest cities, and both follow Eastern Time. Paterson, Elizabeth, Trenton, Clifton, and Camden keep precisely the same local clock. Newark uses the same time as nearby New York City.

Jersey City follows Eastern Time on its waterfront and throughout its neighborhoods. Paterson and other northern cities have no time difference from Newark. Trenton, the state capital, shares its time with both Philadelphia and New York.

Atlantic City and the Jersey Shore remain on the statewide Eastern Time schedule. When arranging a call or journey within New Jersey, naming the city is useful for directions and sunrise information, but not for resolving a time difference. Someone in Cape May can use the same meeting time as someone in Bergen County.

When the sun rises in New Jersey

Sunrise is not simultaneous everywhere in the state. A place farther east will generally receive sunrise earlier by the clock than a place farther west, although latitude, the date, elevation, and the visible horizon all influence the result.

Coastal locations may offer an open view toward the eastern horizon. Buildings, hills, and trees can delay the moment when a person actually sees direct sunlight, even though the published astronomical sunrise has already occurred.

Seasonal changes affect both sunrise and sunset. Daylight lasts longer in summer and less time in winter. The switch between standard time and daylight saving time also moves displayed sunrise times by the clock, which can make the change appear abrupt.

Use a city-specific calculation when timing a beach walk, commute, photograph, or outdoor event. A statewide sunrise label is convenient for orientation, but Newark, Trenton, and Cape May do not have identical sunrise times.
