Idaho uses two time zones. Southern Idaho, including Boise, follows Mountain Time, while the northern Panhandle, including Coeur d’Alene and Lewiston, follows Pacific Time. The state’s long north-south shape crosses an official time-zone boundary. A statewide answer without a city can consequently be wrong by one hour. Boise is a suitable reference for the south, but it does not represent the clock used throughout northern Idaho.

Both Idaho zones observe daylight saving time. Mountain and Pacific communities change their clocks on the same seasonal schedule, so the one-hour difference within the state remains in place. Idaho is narrow at the top, but its scheduling problem is a full hour wide.

Where Idaho’s clocks differ

Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Idaho Falls, Pocatello, and Twin Falls use Mountain Time. Coeur d’Alene, Lewiston, Moscow, and other communities in the northern Panhandle use Pacific Time. For an unfamiliar address near the division, identify its county or use a location-based time-zone lookup.

Use MT for Boise and the broad southern portion of Idaho. Use PT for Coeur d’Alene and the northern Panhandle. Add the zone abbreviation to statewide meeting notices. Avoid assuming that every Idaho telephone number represents Mountain Time.

During standard time, the applicable labels are Mountain Standard Time and Pacific Standard Time. During daylight saving time, they become Mountain Daylight Time and Pacific Daylight Time. Using the general labels MT and PT avoids accidentally naming the wrong seasonal form.

Large cities and sunrise variations

Boise is Idaho’s largest city. Meridian and Nampa are also among its largest population centers, followed by communities such as Idaho Falls, Caldwell, Pocatello, Coeur d’Alene, and Twin Falls. The precise ordering can depend on the population estimate and whether city limits or metropolitan areas are compared.

Sunrise varies substantially across Idaho because the state extends across both latitude and longitude and contains varied terrain. Boise and Coeur d’Alene do not share one statewide sunrise value. Their different zones also mean that comparing clock readings alone can conceal the underlying solar difference.

Mountain ridges are important when interpreting sunrise. An astronomical table typically calculates the event against an ideal horizon, while an observer in a valley may not see direct sunlight until it clears nearby terrain.

Pick the nearest Idaho city or exact coordinates. Confirm whether that place follows Mountain or Pacific Time. Use the intended date and current daylight-saving status. Check local topography if visible sunrise matters for outdoor plans.

The length of daylight also changes with season and latitude. Northern Idaho and southern Idaho can therefore experience different sunrise patterns even before their separate civil-time labels are considered.
