Most of Florida follows Eastern Time, while part of the western Panhandle follows Central Time. Check the location as well as the state before scheduling a call, journey, broadcast, or deadline. Eastern Time applies to cities including Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando, Tallahassee, and Fort Lauderdale. Pensacola and Panama City are among the communities that use Central Time. A statewide time reading can therefore be misleading when the western Panhandle is involved.

Florida observes daylight saving time. Participating areas move their clocks forward in spring and back in autumn, retaining the one-hour difference between the Eastern and Central portions. Devices with current time-zone data normally make these changes automatically. In Florida, “same state” does not always mean “same hour.”

The boundary between Eastern and Central Time crosses the Panhandle rather than following Florida’s state line. For practical planning, identify the city or county instead of assigning one time zone to every Florida address.

Use Eastern Time for Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando, and most of the state. Confirm Central Time for destinations in the western Panhandle, including Pensacola. Include ET or CT in invitations when participants may be on opposite sides of the boundary.

Use a named location for automated conversions rather than a manually entered UTC offset. Time-zone names are safer than fixed offsets because Florida changes clocks seasonally. Eastern Standard Time and Central Standard Time apply during the standard-time period; Eastern Daylight Time and Central Daylight Time apply during daylight saving time.

Largest cities and sunrise in Florida

Jacksonville is Florida’s largest city by population within city limits. Other major population centers include Miami, Tampa, Orlando, St. Petersburg, and Hialeah. Metropolitan size and municipal population are different measures, so lists based on metro areas may appear in another order.

Sunrise is local to a precise place and date. Miami and Pensacola do not see sunrise at the same clock time because they are far apart in longitude and use different time zones. Jacksonville, Tampa, and Orlando also have their own daily values.

Season, latitude, longitude, elevation, and the adopted civil time all affect a published sunrise time. Daylight saving time shifts the displayed clock reading without changing the astronomical event. For an accurate result, choose the city and date rather than relying on a single statewide sunrise entry.

Select the Florida city nearest to the observation point. Confirm whether the location uses Eastern or Central Time. Choose the correct date, especially around a clock change. Allow for a limited horizon if the view is obstructed by buildings, trees, or terrain.
