Alaska, United States
Most of Alaska uses Alaska Time, while the western Aleutian Islands use Hawaii-Aleutian Time. Because the state spans two time zones and a vast geographic area, select a specific community when checking its current time or sunrise.

Current time in Alaska, United States
Alaska is the largest U.S. state by area, and one clock cannot accurately describe every community. Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, and most populated places use Alaska Standard Time, UTC−9, or Alaska Daylight Time, UTC−8, according to the season.
The Aleutian Islands west of the relevant time-zone boundary use Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time, UTC−10, and Hawaii-Aleutian Daylight Time, UTC−9. Unlike Hawaii, the Alaskan part of this zone observes the seasonal clock change.
Always attach a place name to an Alaskan time. “Time in Alaska” commonly means the Alaska Time Zone, but that shorthand can be wrong for a western Aleutian community. In a state this wide, “Alaska time” is a useful phrase until someone asks, “Which island?”
Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, and the Aleutians
Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city and uses Alaska Time. Fairbanks, Juneau, and the state capital’s surrounding region follow the same zone. Sitka, Ketchikan, and communities on the North Slope also use Alaska Time despite their considerable separation.
Anchorage uses Alaska Time. Fairbanks shares Anchorage’s civil time. Juneau follows Alaska Time in the southeast. Most of the state changes between standard and daylight time together. Parts of the Aleutian chain use Hawaii-Aleutian Time.
For flights, marine travel, and remote appointments, confirm both the destination and its time-zone abbreviation. An itinerary that crosses the Aleutian boundary includes a clock change even though the entire trip remains within one state.
Alaska’s unusual daylight and sunrise
Latitude dominates Alaska’s daylight patterns. Summer brings very long days in northern communities, while winter can bring very little daylight. Above the Arctic Circle, there are periods when a conventional daily sunrise or sunset does not occur.
This does not mean clocks stop working. Civil time continues normally even when the Sun remains above or below the horizon. A sunrise display may therefore show no event for a chosen date and high-latitude location.
Longitude also matters. Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks, Utqiaġvik, and Aleutian communities can have markedly different solar schedules despite sharing a state. Use exact local data rather than applying Anchorage’s sunrise to Alaska generally.
Questions and answers
- Does all of Alaska use the same time?
- No. Most places use Alaska Time, while part of the western Aleutian Islands uses Hawaii-Aleutian Time.
- What time does Anchorage use?
- Anchorage uses Alaska Standard Time outside daylight saving and Alaska Daylight Time while it is observed.
- Why might no sunrise be listed?
- At high latitudes, the Sun can remain below or above the horizon throughout a calendar day. The result depends on the location and date.
