The local clock runs twelve hours ahead of UTC. Nui shares this offset with Funafuti, Nanumea, Nanumanga, Niutao, Nukufetau, and the other parts of Tuvalu. There is no domestic time-zone boundary to cross.

Since the offset does not change seasonally, Nui timestamps have a stable UTC relationship. The time gap with an overseas destination may still vary if that destination observes daylight saving time. Nui keeps the same hour all year; deciding whether a boat is “near” is a different system entirely.

Tanrake and practical place names

Tanrake is the main settlement on Nui and the clearest local reference for appointments. Nui is an atoll rather than a conventional city, so settlement and islet names are more informative than a list of urban centres.

Use Tanrake for events in the principal village. Give a specific landing or meeting point for transport arrangements. Apply UTC+12 throughout the atoll. Use Nui’s own location for solar calculations. Funafuti may appear as the example city for Tuvalu Time in international systems. That does not mean Nui follows Funafuti’s local sunrise or weather. It means both locations are governed by the same national clock.

Calculating sunrise and overseas time

Nui’s sunrise is calculated for a particular day and geographic point. Seasonal movement in daylight continues without any clock change. Two services can also differ slightly if they use different coordinates or definitions for the horizon.

Add twelve hours when converting UTC to Nui time, remembering that the answer may fall on the next date. Subtract twelve hours for conversion from Nui to UTC. A calendar entry should include a full date because “tomorrow morning” may refer to different dates for participants on opposite sides of the Pacific.

Name Nui or Tanrake in the event details. Write UTC+12 beside the local time. Verify the overseas participant’s current offset. Recheck local dawn and weather before an outdoor departure. Calculated sunrise assumes a standard astronomical horizon. A cloud bank, vegetation, buildings, or an obstructed shoreline view can delay the first visible sunlight without changing the published solar event.
