Tokat is the provincial seat and main namesake city. Erbaa is a prominent district centre north of Tokat city. Turhal lies west of the capital and is an important urban centre. Niksar is a historic district centre in the northern part of the province.

Zile is a well-established town southwest of Tokat city. Reşadiye, Almus, Artova, Başçiftlik, Pazar, Sulusaray, and Yeşilyurt are among the other district centres. Rankings by size require care because district populations include territory outside the central town.
