Zanzibar North keeps East Africa Time, or UTC+3, all year. Mkokotoni, Nungwi, Kiwengwa and the region’s other settlements do not change clocks for daylight saving time. The region occupies northern Unguja and includes communities on different sides of the island. Their official hour is identical, although their experience of dawn can vary with position, coast and horizon.

The fixed UTC+3 schedule

To find Zanzibar North time from UTC, add three hours. The calculation is constant in every season. There is also no time-zone boundary between Zanzibar North and the neighboring regions of Unguja. Use East Africa Time for appointments and transport.

Keep the UTC+3 offset throughout the year. Check the destination’s rules when arranging an overseas call. Use a named settlement when looking up sunrise. A changing international time difference does not mean Zanzibar has adjusted its clocks. It usually means the other country has begun or ended daylight saving time. Northern settlements and the rising Sun

Mkokotoni is the administrative center of Zanzibar North. Nungwi is a prominent settlement at the northern end of Unguja, and Kiwengwa is a well-known community on the northeastern coast. Other settlements contribute to a region that is more dispersed than a conventional city-centered province.

The Sun rises in the eastern part of the sky, so an open east-facing coast can offer a clear view. On the western side, the eastern horizon may instead cross the island’s land, vegetation and buildings. This changes the visible experience without altering the official astronomical definition.

Sunrise time varies with the calendar date and exact coordinates. Zanzibar’s tropical position keeps day-length changes less extreme than in high-latitude countries, but dawn still shifts over the year. A single permanent sunrise value would therefore be inaccurate.

Weather adds another practical distinction. An astronomical table can identify when the Sun crosses an ideal horizon, but clouds may hide it. Conversely, the sky begins to brighten before sunrise during twilight. Anyone planning photography or a boat departure should distinguish first light from sunrise and consult the chosen locality.
