The current local time for both Zurich city and the canton of Zurich comes from the Europe/Zurich zone. Standard time is CET, one hour ahead of UTC. Daylight saving time is CEST, two hours ahead of UTC.

Clocks move forward on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October. The switch occurs throughout Switzerland at once. There is no time difference between Zurich Airport, the city center, Winterthur, communities beside Lake Zurich, or municipalities near the cantonal boundary.

Zurich shares its civil time with the rest of Switzerland and many nearby European places. For overseas communication, use the full time-zone name and the event date. The numerical difference can change temporarily when countries begin or end daylight saving time on different days.

Sunrise shifts throughout the year, becoming earlier toward summer and later toward winter. Sunset shifts as well, creating long summer days and shorter winter days. The daylight-saving transition changes the clock reading assigned to sunrise without causing a sudden astronomical change in the amount of daylight.

For general purposes, a Zurich city sunrise time is a useful reference for the urban area. A location nearer Winterthur, Uster, or the cantonal edge can have a slightly different calculated time. Astronomical sunrise means the Sun has reached the defined horizon used by the calculation. It may remain hidden behind a building or ridge. Cloud cover affects whether it can be seen, but it does not change the calculated sunrise time.
