Asturias, Spain
Asturias uses Central European Time during standard time and Central European Summer Time during daylight saving. Oviedo, Gijón, Avilés and every other Asturian municipality share one official clock, with sunrise changing by season and local horizon.

Current time in Asturias, Spain
Asturias follows mainland Spain’s national clock rules. Its standard offset is UTC+1, rising to UTC+2 when daylight saving time applies. The correct current abbreviation is therefore CET or CEST according to the date.
The region has no separate coastal or mountain time zone. A journey inland from Gijón to Oviedo, or west from Avilés, leaves the clock untouched. Only travel to a territory using another official zone requires conversion.
Asturian weather may hide the sunrise, but it cannot postpone it in the astronomical tables.
Oviedo, Gijón and Avilés
Oviedo is the capital of Asturias. Gijón is a major coastal city, and Avilés is another important urban and industrial centre on the coast. They form the most useful set of reference locations for checking regional time and daylight.
Oviedo provides the administrative reference. Gijón offers a north-coast location for solar calculations. Avilés lies west of Gijón and uses the same civil hour. smaller coastal and mountain communities follow the same time-zone rules.
Because these cities are relatively close in longitude, their calculated solar times may look similar. They are not guaranteed to be identical, and local hills, buildings or a sea horizon can make the first visible sunlight noticeably different.
Sunrise on the coast and in the mountains
Sunrise in Asturias depends on the date and observation point. On a coast with a clear eastern view, the geometric horizon may be visible. In a valley, surrounding slopes can keep the Sun out of sight after the formal sunrise has occurred.
Cloud does not change the astronomical event, but it changes the experience of it. A fully overcast morning may brighten gradually without a visible solar disc. Anyone planning photography or a viewpoint visit should combine sunrise data with the local forecast and terrain.
Use the nearest municipality for the calculation. Verify that the date falls under the expected clock offset. Check the direction and elevation of the local horizon. Arrive before sunrise if twilight or changing colour matters.
Scheduling within and beyond Asturias
Asturias has the same civil time as Madrid and the rest of mainland Spain. Domestic calls therefore need no conversion. Meetings with the Canary Islands or another country should be checked against the destination’s own zone.
For a future international event, provide a full date and an Asturian reference city. Calendar software can then account for seasonal changes. A fixed label such as “UTC+1” is unsuitable for a summer event because Asturias may then be observing UTC+2.
Sunrise listings should also be read in the applicable local clock. The apparent one-hour jump around a seasonal transition is mainly a relabelling by civil time, not a sudden astronomical shift in the Sun’s behaviour.
Questions and answers
- Does Asturias change clocks?
- Yes. It observes the same daylight saving schedule as mainland Spain.
- Are Oviedo and Gijón in the same time zone?
- Yes. Their official time is always the same.
- Can hills affect the listed sunrise?
- They do not alter the astronomical calculation, but they can delay the first direct view of the Sun.
