Dobrovo is the municipal seat and a principal service centre. Other prominent settlements include Kojsko, Šmartno, Vipolže, and Medana. None is a large city; they are compact settlements serving different parts of the hilly municipality.

Dobrovo is the administrative centre of Brda. Kojsko is a significant local settlement on the municipality’s eastern side. Šmartno is a distinctive historic village. Vipolže and Medana are established communities in the border landscape.

Because the communities are spread over ridges and slopes, a journey between them can change the view of the sky without changing the time zone. Phones and watches should continue to display the same Slovenian time throughout Brda.

Sunrise across ridges and valleys

Daily sunrise and sunset vary with the season. Summer mornings begin earlier and evenings remain light longer; winter reverses that pattern. The correct value must be calculated for the chosen date rather than treated as a permanent municipal characteristic.

An astronomical sunrise assumes a clear horizon. Brda’s folds of land complicate the visible result. An east-facing slope may receive direct morning sun while a nearby hollow remains shaded. In the evening, a western outlook can retain sunlight after another village has lost it behind a ridge.

Weather adds another layer. Cloud can hide the solar disc, and haze can soften the first direct light, yet neither changes the official sunrise calculation. For photography, walking, or agricultural work, combine the published time with knowledge of slope direction and current sky conditions.

Twilight is also useful. Outdoor visibility begins before sunrise and continues after sunset, but it is not equivalent to full daylight. The transition is gradual, particularly when clouds or terrain prevent a clear view of the Sun.
