Troms og Finnmark, Norway
Troms og Finnmark follows Norway’s Central European clock: UTC+1 in standard time and UTC+2 during daylight saving. The name refers to a former combined county, but it remains useful for finding time and daylight information across northern Norway.

Current time in Troms og Finnmark, Norway
Every community covered by this regional label uses the same national time. Tromsø in the west and Vadsø in the east display an identical civil time, as do Alta, Hammerfest, Kirkenes and smaller settlements between them.
Norway advances its clocks for daylight saving and returns to standard time later in the year. If a phone or computer is set to Norway’s time zone, it should make that change automatically. A manually configured UTC offset may need adjustment when the seasonal change occurs.
Troms og Finnmark no longer operates as one county administration. Troms and Finnmark are separate counties, yet pages, addresses and datasets may still use the combined name. That administrative distinction does not alter the clock used in either area. A county boundary can move on a map without making anyone reset the kitchen clock.
Urban centres from Tromsø to Kirkenes
The territory represented by the old combined name spans a broad section of northern Norway. Tromsø is its largest urban centre. Alta and Harstad are also important population centres, while Hammerfest, Vadsø and Kirkenes provide useful eastern and coastal reference points.
The civil time remains uniform across this wide area, but solar time does not. Eastern settlements generally meet the sun’s daily path earlier than western ones. Local horizons complicate the picture further: a mountain ridge, fjord wall or nearby island may hide direct sunlight after the calculated sunrise.
Choose a named city rather than relying on a regional midpoint. Check that the selected date is correct. Read twilight times when the sun does not cross the horizon. Treat calculated sunrise as a horizon event, not a promise of clear skies.
Sunrise in the far north
Much of this territory lies well north of the Arctic Circle. Its annual pattern includes very long summer days and extremely short winter days. Depending on latitude, the sun may remain above the horizon around midsummer or stay below it during part of winter.
The duration of polar day and polar night is not identical across the region. Northern and southern locations differ, and coastal terrain produces a different visible horizon from inland plateaus or enclosed valleys. Twilight can still supply useful outdoor light when a sunrise is absent.
This distinction matters when planning road journeys, fishing trips or photography. A conventional sunrise-and-sunset table may show no event on a particular date. In that case, civil twilight and nautical twilight often describe changing light more clearly than the words day and night.
Questions and answers
- Is Troms og Finnmark still one county?
- No. The combined county was divided into Troms and Finnmark, although the former name still appears in searches and older material.
- Do Troms and Finnmark use different time zones?
- No. Both follow Norwegian standard time and the same daylight-saving changes.
- Why can sunrise differ when the clocks agree?
- Sunrise depends on longitude, latitude, date and the local horizon. A time zone sets civil time for a region rather than synchronising its solar events.
