Current time in Oslo, Norway
Oslo uses CET, corresponding to UTC+1, during standard time. When daylight saving is active, it uses CEST, corresponding to UTC+2. The change applies across the whole municipality. There is no time difference between central Oslo and outer districts such as Grorud, Søndre Nordstrand, Ullern, or Nordstrand. Neighboring Akershus also follows the same clock, which simplifies daily commuting across the municipal boundary.
Public transport, business hours, events, and appointments are stated in local Norwegian time unless another zone is explicitly named. International callers should check whether their own location changes clocks on the same schedule.
Oslo commuters may disagree about the quickest route, but at least every platform clock argues from the same time zone.
One city with many urban districts
Oslo is both Norway’s capital and a county-level municipality. Rather than containing several separate cities, it consists of one city divided into boroughs, neighborhoods, and local centers. Common geographic reference points include:
Sentrum, the central city area Grünerløkka, east of the center Majorstuen, a busy transport and commercial area Frogner, in the city’s west Grorud, in the northeastern part of Oslo Holmenkollen, on higher ground above the city
All use exactly the same official time. Differences in elevation and horizon, however, can alter when direct sunlight reaches a particular street or hillside.
Sunrise over the capital
Oslo has long summer days and short winter days, but it lies south of the Arctic Circle. The city therefore experiences a sunrise and sunset every day, without true midnight sun or polar night. Published sunrise times are usually calculated for a representative position in Oslo. A person east or west of that point may see a slightly different time. Buildings, hills, woodland, and the terrain around the Oslofjord can also affect the first visible sunlight.
Dawn begins before sunrise as the sky brightens, while dusk continues after sunset. These twilight periods are especially useful when estimating available outdoor light. A weather forecast should be checked separately because cloud affects visibility but does not change the calculated sunrise.
