All of Finnmark uses the same official time as mainland Norway. Standard time is CET, or UTC+1. The daylight-saving clock is CEST, or UTC+2. This single time zone covers a geographically broad county extending far east. Consequently, solar time and the official clock can feel less closely matched in eastern Finnmark than in western parts of Norway. The legal time nevertheless remains unchanged across municipal boundaries.

Alta, Hammerfest, Vadsø, Kirkenes, and communities along the coast and inland all follow the same seasonal clock changes. Crossing the border into another country may require an adjustment, but traveling within Finnmark does not. In Finnmark, the clock can say night while the sky confidently disagrees.

Main towns in Norway’s far northeast

Finnmark has widely separated settlements, with long journeys between many of them. Alta is the county’s largest urban center. Hammerfest is a significant coastal town, Vadsø is an administrative center, and Kirkenes stands close to Norway’s eastern border.

Although their clocks agree, their sunrise tables need not. Finnmark spans enough longitude and latitude for the Sun’s timing and seasonal behavior to differ meaningfully from one locality to another.

Midnight sun, polar night, and twilight

Much of Finnmark lies north of the Arctic Circle. Depending on the exact location and date, the Sun may remain above the horizon around summer or stay below it during part of winter. A conventional sunrise or sunset may therefore be absent on some calendar days.

Polar night does not mean continuous pitch darkness. Twilight can brighten the sky around the middle of the day, and snow or moonlight may add substantial illumination. Similarly, midnight sun describes the Sun remaining above the horizon, though cloud and terrain can still conceal it.

Always use a location-specific daylight table. Alta and Kirkenes are far apart, and a result for one should not be treated as a precise result for the other. If a table shows no sunrise, that can be a valid astronomical condition rather than missing information.
