Victoria, Malta
Victoria uses the same clock as the rest of Malta: CET in standard time and CEST during daylight saving. Sunrise on Gozo shifts seasonally, and hills or buildings can affect when sunlight first becomes visible from a particular location.

Current time in Victoria, Malta
Victoria is the principal town of Gozo, Malta’s second-largest inhabited island. It is also widely known by its older name, Rabat. Neither Gozo nor Victoria maintains a separate time zone, so the displayed local time follows Malta’s nationwide clock.
During standard time, Victoria observes Central European Time, one hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. During the daylight-saving part of the year, it observes Central European Summer Time, two hours ahead. The transition is made with the rest of the country.
Victoria’s standard abbreviation is CET in winter. Its daylight-saving abbreviation is CEST. No clock adjustment is required when travelling between Gozo and Malta’s main island. International comparisons must use the offset active on the relevant date.
A current-time display should identify both the hour and the active abbreviation. Writing “Malta time” may be sufficient for a domestic appointment, but CET or CEST gives overseas participants a clearer indication of the applicable offset. Gozo keeps its own pace, but fortunately it does not keep its own time zone.
Victoria within Gozo and Malta
Victoria serves as an administrative, commercial and transport centre for Gozo. Other notable Gozitan localities include Nadur, Xagħra, Żebbuġ, Għajnsielem and Xewkija. Population rankings can vary with the date and the boundaries used, so these places are better treated as important localities than as a permanent numerical league table.
On Malta’s main island, prominent population centres include Birkirkara, Mosta, Qormi and St Paul’s Bay, while Valletta is the national capital. Every one of these places follows the same civil time as Victoria.
Read ferry and bus timetables as local Malta time. Do not add or subtract an hour when crossing between the islands. Check daylight-saving differences before calling a country outside Europe. Use the full date for plans made around a seasonal clock transition.
Shared time does not mean identical opening hours. Shops, attractions, public offices and transport operators set their own schedules, and seasonal services may change independently of the clock system.
Sunrise across the Gozitan landscape
Victoria lies inland near the centre of Gozo rather than directly on an open eastern shore. Published sunrise calculations describe the astronomical event for the locality, but the surrounding terrain and urban skyline determine when a particular observer first sees direct sunlight.
Daylight lasts longer in one part of the year and less long in another. Sunrise and sunset therefore need a date-specific calculation. A general time-zone offset cannot reveal today’s sunrise, because the Sun’s apparent position changes from one day to the next.
For an early walk or a timed photograph, distinguish among astronomical sunrise, first light and the moment the Sun clears a nearby obstruction. These are not interchangeable. Weather can also hide the visible sunrise without changing its calculated time.
The daylight-saving transition changes the clock label assigned to morning light. After a clock change, sunrise may appear abruptly later or earlier by the civil clock, although the underlying seasonal progression remains smooth.
Questions and answers
- Is Victoria in the same time zone as Valletta?
- Yes. Victoria, Valletta and every other Maltese locality use the same national time.
- Is Victoria also called Rabat?
- Yes. Rabat is an established alternative name for Victoria on Gozo.
- Can I use one sunrise time for every place on Gozo?
- Not precisely. The island is small, but coordinates, terrain and the viewing horizon can produce practical differences.
