Lodwar is the county capital and an important regional service centre. Kakuma is a major town in Turkana West. Lokichogio lies farther north on a route toward South Sudan. Lokichar serves the county’s southern area.

Turkana’s size makes local coordinates important. Sunrise at a settlement in the county’s east will not occur at exactly the same clock minute as sunrise farther west.
