The current time in Okinawa is identical to the time in Tokyo. Japan applies a single national time zone to Okinawa Prefecture and the rest of the country, so domestic travellers do not reset their clocks when flying south to the islands.

JST remains nine hours ahead of UTC through every month. Add nine hours to UTC for Okinawa time. To find UTC from an Okinawa timestamp, subtract nine hours and account for any change of date. Okinawa stretches across a long chain of islands, yet nobody needs to pack a second time zone.

Island travel on one official clock

Okinawa Prefecture includes many inhabited islands spread across a substantial maritime area. Aircraft, ferries, accommodation, tours, and local services use JST throughout. A journey between islands can take time, but the departure and arrival clocks remain aligned.

Keep these distinctions in mind when organising a trip: Geographic separation does not create a separate civil time zone. All Okinawan islands use UTC+9 for official schedules. Japan does not switch the prefecture to summer time.

Weather-related schedule changes are operational changes, not clock changes. For international calls, the other participant’s daylight saving practice may alter the time difference. Confirm the intended date instead of assuming that a conversion used in one season remains valid in another.

Cities, islands, and sunrise variation

Naha is the prefectural capital and the main urban centre on Okinawa Island. Okinawa City, Uruma, Urasoe, and Nago are other important cities on that island. Ishigaki is the principal city of the Yaeyama area, while Miyakojima serves the Miyako Islands. All use the same clock.

The island chain covers enough east-west distance for sunrise calculations to vary meaningfully by location. A value for Naha should not be substituted for Ishigaki or Miyakojima when exact timing matters. The date must also be specified because sunrise moves through the seasons.

An open shoreline can offer a broad horizon, but only when it faces the relevant direction. Headlands, nearby islands, hills, trees, and buildings may obscure the first appearance of the sun. Cloud cover changes what is visible without changing the calculated sunrise.

Choose a sunrise table for the correct island or coordinates. If the aim is to be outdoors before the sky brightens, check twilight as well as sunrise, since dawn begins earlier.
