Sardinia uses Central European Time, abbreviated CET, when standard time applies. CET is one hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. During Italy’s daylight-saving period, the island changes to Central European Summer Time, or CEST, which is two hours ahead of UTC.

The clock is uniform across Sardinia. Travelling from Cagliari in the south to Sassari in the north does not require an adjustment, and ferries or flights arriving from mainland Italy remain in the same time zone. The seasonal clock change also follows the national Italian schedule. Island pace may feel unhurried, but Sardinian clocks keep exactly the same time as Rome.

Time in Sardinia’s largest cities

Cagliari, the regional capital, is one of the island’s main reference points for local time. Sassari, Quartu Sant’Elena, Olbia, and other large communities use the identical clock. A city search can therefore help with weather or sunrise details, but it will not reveal a different civil time.

Cagliari follows CET in standard time and CEST during daylight saving. Sassari has the same clock as Cagliari despite lying farther north. Quartu Sant’Elena shares the time used throughout the metropolitan area of Cagliari.

Olbia keeps the same time as the rest of Sardinia and mainland Italy. This consistency is useful when arranging connections between airports, ferry ports, hotels, and inland destinations. A departure printed in local time means the same thing anywhere on the island.

Sunrise and daylight across Sardinia

Sunrise is not a fixed clock time. It changes with the date and with the observer’s position. Eastern Sardinia generally sees the sun appear earlier by the clock than western parts of the island, while the difference between northern and southern locations changes through the year.

For a useful sunrise time, choose the nearest city rather than relying on a single value for the entire region. Cagliari is suitable for the south, Sassari for the northwest, and Olbia for the northeast. Mountains, buildings, and the local horizon can affect when direct sunlight actually becomes visible even when the calculated sunrise has already occurred.

Day length also varies seasonally. Summer brings longer daylight, while winter brings shorter days. The daylight-saving clock shift changes the displayed hour of sunrise and sunset, but it does not change the amount of sunlight available.
