Current time in Emilia-Romagna, Italy
Bologna, Parma, Modena, Reggio Emilia, Ferrara, Ravenna, Rimini, and the region’s smaller municipalities all share one local time. The region extends from the Apennines to the Adriatic, but it contains no civil time-zone boundary.
CET is one hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. CEST, used when daylight saving time is active, is two hours ahead. The national change applies simultaneously across Emilia-Romagna, so rail timetables and appointments remain aligned from Piacenza in the west to Rimini in the east.
When coordinating with another country, check both locations’ current offsets. Seasonal clock changes are not observed everywhere, and different jurisdictions may change their clocks on different schedules.
The regional train may cross half of Emilia-Romagna, yet the only clock change is the one announced for all Italy.
A shared clock along the Via Emilia
Many of the region’s principal cities form a west-to-east chain associated with the Via Emilia. Their economic identities and local customs differ, but their clocks do not. Piacenza and Parma represent the western part of the regional corridor.
Reggio Emilia and Modena lie between Parma and Bologna. Bologna is the regional capital and a major transport hub. Ferrara and Ravenna serve the eastern lowlands. Rimini stands on the Adriatic coast. Bologna is a practical reference for the region’s official time. It is not a universal reference for daylight, however. A sunrise listing for Bologna should not replace a local calculation for Rimini, Parma, or an Apennine village.
Sunrise from the plain to the Adriatic
Eastern Emilia-Romagna generally encounters sunrise before the western end because it lies farther east. The difference remains an astronomical distinction rather than a clock-zone difference. Everyone still reads the same official hour.
The broad Po Valley offers a different horizon from the Apennine foothills. Mountains can block the low sun, and fog or cloud can hide it after its calculated rise. Along the Adriatic coast, an open seaward view may provide a clearer eastern horizon.
Daylight expands toward summer and contracts toward winter. During CEST, the clock labels dawn and dusk an hour later than standard time would. Local sunrise information is useful for commuting, beach visits, farming, hiking, and photography; it should be matched to the particular city and date.
Questions and answers
- Is Bologna in the same time zone as Rimini?
- Yes. Both cities follow CET and CEST.
- Does traveling west to Parma change the official time?
- No. Parma uses the same clock as Bologna and the rest of Emilia-Romagna.
- Where does the sun rise first within the region?
- More easterly places generally experience astronomical sunrise earlier, subject to latitude and the local horizon.
