Pekanbaru, Dumai, and every regency in Riau follow the same official time. This consistency simplifies road travel, business coordination, and port schedules across a province stretching from inland Sumatra toward the Strait of Malacca.

WIB places Riau seven hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. It is the same zone used in Jakarta and much of western Indonesia. No conversion is needed for a call between Pekanbaru and Jakarta, though travel duration and local opening hours still need to be considered.

Riau’s roads may take you through forests and plantations, but they never take you across a time-zone line.

Pekanbaru, Dumai, and regional centers

Pekanbaru is Riau’s capital and largest city, serving as its main administrative and commercial center. Dumai is the province’s other autonomous city and an important port. Towns such as Bangkinang, Pangkalan Kerinci, Rengat, and Siak Sri Indrapura act as centers for their surrounding regencies.
