Current time in Assam, India
Guwahati, Silchar, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Nagaon, and every other part of Assam share one official time. That time is IST, the national standard used throughout India. Assam’s northeastern position means sunrise and sunset commonly occur earlier by the clock than they do in western parts of India. The difference comes from longitude and seasonal daylight, not from another civil time zone. Tea may have its own timetable, but Assam’s clocks still answer to IST.
How Assam’s time zone works
IST is five hours and thirty minutes ahead of UTC. It does not move forward or backward for summer. A recurring event at a fixed Assam time therefore stays fixed relative to UTC, although participants in daylight-saving regions may see it shift on their own calendars.
Standard used: Indian Standard Time Short form: IST Offset: UTC+5:30 Daylight saving adjustment: none Difference between Assam districts: none officially To convert from UTC, add five hours and thirty minutes. To convert Assam time to UTC, subtract that interval. Always check whether the result belongs to the previous or following calendar day.
Urban centres and sunrise in Assam
Guwahati is Assam’s largest and most prominent urban centre. Silchar, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Nagaon, Tinsukia, Tezpur, and Sivasagar are among its other important cities and towns. Each observes the same time despite differences in longitude.
The Brahmaputra valley runs broadly across the state, while hills and varied local horizons shape the experience of daylight. An eastern location such as Dibrugarh will not have precisely the same sunrise as Guwahati. A hill, tree line, or dense group of buildings can also delay the first visible glimpse of the sun.
Published sunrise values normally describe an astronomical event calculated for a location and date. They do not promise direct sunlight at street level. For travel, photography, farming, or outdoor exercise, use the closest available location and consider the surrounding terrain.
Check sunrise for the intended city or coordinates. Confirm that the date is local to Assam. Do not confuse dawn with sunrise. Check sunset separately when planning the return journey.
Questions and answers
- Does Assam use a special tea-garden time officially?
- No. Indian Standard Time is the official civil time. A workplace schedule does not replace the state’s official zone.
- Does Assam observe daylight saving time?
- No. Its clocks stay on UTC+5:30 throughout the year.
- Why is daylight earlier than in Delhi?
- Assam lies farther east, so the sun reaches its local meridian earlier even though both places use IST.
