Salgótarján provides the main clock reference for county administration. Balassagyarmat lies in the county’s west. Bátonyterenye is south of Salgótarján. Pásztó serves communities near the Mátra and Cserhát landscapes.

Szécsény and Rétság use exactly the same official hour. This shared clock simplifies local journeys: a departure stated at noon means the same thing in every Nógrád town. Only actual travel duration, not a time-zone boundary, separates the arrival time.

How the landscape affects sunrise

Astronomical sunrise depends on the date and coordinates. Because Nógrád is not a single point, published values may differ slightly among its towns. The terrain adds another practical distinction: a ridge can hide the Sun after it has technically risen above an ideal, unobstructed horizon.
