The Caribbean location of the department does not give it a separate nautical or island time zone. Its communities follow the same official clock as mainland Honduras, and watches do not need adjustment on a domestic trip from La Ceiba to Roatán.

Honduras does not routinely move its clocks forward and back for daylight saving time. The UTC−6 offset therefore remains stable through the year. International time differences can still change when the other country starts or ends its own daylight-saving period.

The ferry crosses water, not a time-zone boundary—though a delayed boat can make that distinction feel academic.

For bookings, specify both the island and Honduras. “Roatán time” is readily understood locally, but a written offset is clearer for travelers arriving from abroad. Airlines and ferries normally print times in the local time applicable at each departure or arrival point.

Island sunrise and first light

Sunrise should be calculated for the particular island and date. Roatán stretches east to west, while Utila and Guanaja occupy separate positions, so one result cannot be exact for every community. Differences are generally a matter of solar geometry, not competing clock rules.

Because the UTC offset stays fixed, the displayed sunrise hour follows the sun’s gradual seasonal movement without a daylight-saving jump. Day length, sunrise direction, and twilight still vary over the course of the year.

An observer’s view matters. Hills on Roatán, vegetation, buildings, clouds, and the orientation of a bay can hide the sun beyond the calculated sunrise. A location on a west-facing shore does not necessarily have a clear view toward the point where the sun rises.

Check civil twilight when the practical question is the arrival of usable natural light. Check sunrise when a consistently defined astronomical event is needed. For boating or diving, combine those times with weather, marine conditions, and local operational advice.
