Berlin’s official time zone is Europe/Berlin. The city-state observes Central European Time at UTC+1 during the standard-time part of the year. During daylight saving time, it observes Central European Summer Time at UTC+2.

Clock changes are applied uniformly across Germany. Berlin therefore has the same current time as Potsdam, Frankfurt, Dresden, and other German cities, even though their sunrise and sunset times may differ. The date determines whether the applicable abbreviation is CET or CEST.

When arranging a remote call, “Berlin time” is generally a clear label because it automatically reflects the seasonal clock rule. Mitte contains the historic and governmental center. Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf covers important western districts. Spandau reaches toward Berlin’s western edge. Treptow-Köpenick extends across a broad part of southeastern Berlin.

Pankow includes neighborhoods in the north and northeast. No clock adjustment is needed when traveling on the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram, bus, bicycle, or foot from one borough to another. Differences in arrival time come from the journey, not a time-zone boundary.

When the Sun rises over Berlin

Berlin’s sunrise changes throughout the year. Summer mornings brighten early and daylight continues well into the evening. Winter reverses that pattern, with shorter days, later dawns, and earlier nightfall. Daylight saving time changes the clock label assigned to sunrise, but it does not alter the astronomical event.

A page showing the current sunrise should use Berlin’s exact date and coordinates. Within the city, the calculated astronomical time is very similar from borough to borough, although an unobstructed horizon in an open area will look different from a street enclosed by buildings.

For outdoor plans, distinguish sunrise from first light. Civil twilight precedes the listed sunrise, while direct sunlight may reach a particular street later because of buildings, trees, or cloud. Sunset works the same way in reverse: the published event is astronomical, while visible light fades gradually.
