Saxony-Anhalt lies in central-eastern Germany and extends from northern plains to the Harz region. Its geographic variety does not divide its time. Central European Time, UTC+1, is used during the standard-time part of the year.

When daylight-saving time is active, clocks change to Central European Summer Time, UTC+2. The same transition applies in every municipality and in all neighbouring German states. Sunrise times differ slightly across Saxony-Anhalt because the state has both north-south and east-west extent. A listing for Magdeburg may not exactly match Halle or Wittenberg, despite the identical time shown on their clocks.

Season determines the broad pattern: daylight expands toward summer and contracts toward winter. The adoption of CEST during the daylight-saving period shifts the displayed hour forward but does not alter the astronomical length of the day.
