Prague is both the capital of the Czech Republic and a self-governing region. One official local time applies throughout its territory, so there is no clock difference between the historic centre, outer districts, and Prague Airport.

The city follows the Czech national time-zone rules. Standard time is Central European Time, abbreviated CET, with an offset of UTC+1. During the daylight-saving period, clocks use Central European Summer Time, or CEST, at UTC+2.

The change between standard time and summer time can matter when arranging an international call, flight, train connection, or online event. A time written without its UTC offset may be ambiguous near a clock change. For firm arrangements, include the date, local time, and time-zone abbreviation.

Prague’s astronomical clock is worth admiring, but your departure board remains the better place to check whether the train is waiting.

Prague as a city and region

Unlike Czech regions containing many separate cities, Prague is principally one continuous capital city divided into municipal districts. References to the “largest cities” of the region therefore point back to Prague itself rather than to a collection of independent regional centres.

For practical timekeeping, visitors may encounter names of major districts and areas instead: Prague 1 includes much of the historic centre. Prague 2 extends across central neighbourhoods such as Vinohrady and Vyšehrad.

Prague 4 covers a broad area south of the centre. Prague 5 lies largely to the southwest of the Vltava. Prague 6 includes districts on the route toward the airport. All of these places share the same civil time. Public transport timetables, hotel check-in times, museum opening hours, and restaurant bookings are normally stated in Prague local time unless another zone is explicitly named.

Sunrise and daylight in Prague

Sunrise in Prague changes substantially across the seasons. Summer mornings brighten earlier and winter mornings later, while sunset moves in the opposite direction. The daylight-saving clock change also shifts the displayed clock time of sunrise even though it does not alter the Sun’s movement.

A sunrise time is location-specific as well as date-specific. A value calculated for central Prague can differ slightly from one for an outlying district, although the difference is usually less important than the chosen date and local horizon. Buildings, hills, cloud, and elevation affect when the Sun becomes visible to an observer.

Confirm that the displayed date is the one you need. Check whether the listed zone is CET or CEST. Allow for twilight if you need usable outdoor light before sunrise. Use a location-specific forecast when weather affects the plan.
