West Island is the territory’s administrative centre and the location visitors are most likely to use when checking local time. Bantam, on Home Island, is another principal settlement and the centre of the Cocos Malay community. Direction Island is well known to visitors, although it is not a permanent population centre comparable with West Island or Bantam.

Because the territory is compact, there is no practical time difference between its settlements. A call arranged for West Island also follows the same clock on Home Island. The main scheduling concerns are transport timetables, business hours and the time difference from the caller’s location.

Cocos Islands shares its unusual offset with relatively few places. When converting the time manually, start from UTC and add six hours and thirty minutes. For a meeting spanning several countries, check every participant’s local date as well as the hour.

Sunrise and daylight in Cocos Islands

Sunset and the length of daylight change through the year, even though the clocks themselves do not change.
