The towns around the capital region

The province has no single dominant city comparable in size or national role to Sofia itself. Its administrative landscape is distributed among towns such as Samokov, Botevgrad, Ihtiman, Kostinbrod, Svoge, and Etropole.

Samokov serves the area south of Sofia near the Rila mountain region. Botevgrad is an important town northeast of the capital. Ihtiman lies southeast of Sofia along a major overland corridor. Kostinbrod is close to the capital’s northwestern side.

Svoge and Etropole occupy mountain or valley settings farther from the metropolitan centre. All municipalities use the same legal time. When a listing says “Sofia time,” context determines whether it refers to the city or the surrounding province, but the clock reading itself remains identical.
