How to use October

October is the month where date arithmetic quietly breaks, because in many countries one of its days is 25 hours long. If you are counting hours, scheduling across a weekend, or comparing October to another month, check whether a clock change sits inside your range before you trust the number.

Confirm whether your region shifts clocks this month, and on which weekend. Treat "one day" as 24 hours everywhere except the changeover date. Remember the 31 days: October never has the short-month problem September does.

October 31 and Halloween are the same fixed date every year — no weekday drift to account for.

The extra hour, and who gets it

Where daylight saving ends in October, clocks go back and one hour repeats. That hour exists twice in local time, which means timestamps recorded during it are ambiguous unless they carry a timezone offset. Systems that store local time without an offset lose the distinction permanently — there is no way to recover which of the two 01:30s a record belongs to.

The practical rule is simple: store instants in UTC and convert for display. Everything else is a workaround for having stored the wrong thing. October gives you an extra hour of sleep and takes it back as an hour of debugging. The exchange rate is not favourable.

What the name means

October comes from octo, Latin for eight. It sat eighth in the older Roman calendar that opened in March. The two months added at the front pushed everything back by two, and the numbered names were never renamed to match. October is now the tenth month wearing the name of the eighth.

Reading October as a block

Thirty-one days divides into four weeks plus three, which means October starts and ends on different weekdays and pushes November's start forward by three days. If you are laying out a calendar by hand, this is the offset to carry.

Count 31 days: four full weeks plus three. Whatever weekday October 1 is, October 29, 30 and 31 repeat the first three weekdays of the month. November 1 lands three weekdays after October 1. That last shortcut is worth memorising if you plan across month boundaries often. It saves opening a calendar for the common case.

October in the year's shape

October is the last full month before the year's end starts pulling on everything. November brings the run-up to December, and December brings holidays and shortened working weeks. That makes October the final month where a four-week block of uninterrupted work is realistic without fighting the calendar.

Teams that notice this tend to front-load October — finishing rather than starting, closing rather than opening. Teams that do not notice it discover in mid-December that the work needed three more weeks that no longer exist.

The month also carries a weather turn in much of the northern hemisphere: the first real cold, the first properly dark evening commute. Both arrive faster than people expect, because the clock change compresses the transition into a single weekend rather than spreading it across the month.
