How to use May

Read the grid for the holiday placement in your country, then count the working weeks that survive. In much of Europe, May can lose three or four working days to public holidays, and when those holidays fall midweek, people bridge them with leave and the week disappears entirely.

If you need a decision from someone in May, get it early in the month or accept that it may wait. This is the point in the year when scheduling assumptions quietly fail.

The holidays that shape the month

1 May — International Workers' Day, a public holiday in many countries and a fixed date, so it can land on any weekday. Early May bank holiday — observed on a Monday in some countries rather than on the 1st itself.

Late May holiday — a second public holiday at the end of the month in several places, often marking the unofficial start of summer. Moveable religious dates — Ascension and Pentecost follow Easter, so they drift between May and early June.

Exam season — in many northern school systems, the month when public examinations begin. A fixed-date holiday on a Tuesday costs more working days than the holiday itself. Everyone takes the Monday, and the week never recovers.

Bridging, and why the calendar shape matters

The difference between a holiday on a Tuesday and one on a Wednesday is not one day, it is the whole structure of the week. A Tuesday holiday invites a four-day weekend; a Thursday holiday does the same in the other direction. A Wednesday holiday, oddly, is the least disruptive — it splits the week rather than detaching a piece of it.

This is why May output varies so much between years even though the month always has 31 days. The number of holidays can be identical and the effective capacity quite different, purely because of which weekdays they land on.

Getting real numbers for the month

List the public holidays for the specific country and, where relevant, the region — they are not uniform within every nation. Mark which weekday each one falls on and assume the adjacent day is thin. Count remaining working days rather than working weeks; the two diverge badly here. Check whether Ascension or Pentecost fall in May this year, since they move with Easter.

Name, season and the long evenings

May is generally taken to be named for Maia, a Roman goddess associated with growth. Whatever the etymology, the association fits the northern experience of the month: it is the point where evening daylight becomes genuinely long before the heat of high summer arrives, and it contains the longest stretch of pleasant working weather in many temperate places.

South of the equator the month reads entirely differently — late autumn, shortening days, the run-up to winter. As with January, the hemisphere gap is at its widest in the months furthest from the equinoxes, and May is close to that extreme.
