How to use July

The grid is most useful here for counting who is actually available. July's calendar looks normal — a full month of weekdays, few public holidays in many countries — and that appearance is misleading. The constraint is annual leave, not holidays, and it does not appear on any calendar you can look up.

Use the month view to place fixed dates, then overlay your own team's leave. The gap between the two is the honest picture of July capacity.

What the month contains

4 July — Independence Day in the United States, a fixed-date public holiday that can fall on any weekday. 14 July — the French national day, another fixed date with the same weekday variability. School summer holidays — beginning at different points across countries and regions, typically running six to eight weeks.

Peak travel — the busiest period for flights and roads in the northern hemisphere, concentrated around weekends. Southern winter — below the equator July is midwinter, with a school break in the middle of the academic year.

July has almost no public holidays and almost nobody at their desk. The calendar and reality have rarely disagreed more politely.

The slow month problem

Work does not stop in July, but decisions do. Anything requiring several people to agree tends to stall, because the probability that all of them are present at once falls sharply once individual leave is layered on. A four-person sign-off that takes two days in March can take three weeks in July without anyone being unreasonable.

The fix is structural rather than motivational: reduce the number of people any July decision depends on, name a deputy for each absence in advance, and move genuinely contested decisions to either side of the month. Chasing people harder does not work when they are on a beach.

Planning around the quiet

Collect the team's leave dates before the month starts, not during it. For every approval that must happen, name one person who can give it and one who can cover. Push anything needing a full group to late August or September.

Use the quiet for work that needs concentration rather than coordination — it is the best month of the year for it.

Named for a person, unlike most of the year

July is named after Julius Caesar, and August after Augustus — the two months in the calendar named for individuals rather than gods or numbers. They sit next to each other and both have 31 days, which is the source of a persistent story that August was lengthened so as not to look lesser than July. It is a good story and repeated often; the historical evidence for it is not as solid as the retelling suggests, so it is better enjoyed than asserted.

What is plain is the result: two consecutive 31-day months in the middle of the year, breaking the alternating pattern the calendar otherwise almost keeps.
